26 Years, 85 Notebooks

A look into the sketchbooks of Michael Bierut.

On August 12, 1982, I took a 10 x 7 1/8 inch National Blank Book Company composition book from the supply closet of my then employer, Vignelli Associates. From that moment, I have never been without one. I always have one at my desk. I take one with me to every meeting. I am now in the middle of Notebook #85. It’s in front of me right now. Together, these well-worn books create a history of my working life that spans three decades.

Wow, that impressive, I’ve started using a started A4 192 page Counter book for taking notes and it works wonders. I’m now on my second one. take me around 9 months to complete 1.

That’s really impressive ! I really wish I had something like that to keep track of my life’s work…

Never to late to start though !

Gives me hope for the large box of journals and sketchbooks I keep in the cellar.

I started using Bristol City Council diaries in 2003 and now 27 moleskines later I’m running 2 at the same time:
1)jottings, scribblings, thinkings, sketchings, all done w/ Sharpie
2)smaller one for things that i believe have a value to them and could be turned into cash / spiritual fulfilment.

I can’t live without my google calendar and google docs. But I guess viewing a long list of notes on the computer screen just isn’t the same…

You should show some of the internal pages so we can see the progression of your work over those decades. That would be kind of neat.
