What?? No Way!
C.M.Y.K.’s call for participants begins in metro Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Seven graphic designers from across America will be chosen based on their portfolios to compete in “C.M.Y.K. – America’s Top Graphic Designer.”
What is this world coming to? :) What do you guys think of this?

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I think reality shows are overdone in the first place. But I know I’ll still watch it :)

Ok. Gross commercialization. Aka Big Brother type thing. Everyone will now start selling their soul and loose focus until this contest is over.
Is is the money, the fame or both. You just can’t decide who is a Top Designer in America or anywhere for that matter. It’s just ludicrous to think that if you win this you are the BEST ever. It’s so cheesy it just stinks.
It seems the higher profile they get the worse it becomes for all those involved. Like the X-Factor or whatever.
The reality is that there will ALWAYS be better designers who just do their stuff because they love it, and who will be way more creative and experienced than whoever wins this contest.
So then it becomes just a big silly game with lots of money and inflated ego’s.
Ofcourse we would all secretly like to be said you are a great designer just off the cuff, and oh by the way, here’s 100k for being so damn good. Now that would be cool. :)

Seriously lame. I can’t stand this type of television…

sure is a crappy website for someone looking for the best of the best.

They don’t know anything about designing for the internet and mobile if they think the name CMYK is going to cut it. I can’t remember the last time I used CMYK, print screens and a traditional printer who uses separations. Even the show title demonstrates a lack of understanding of how stuff works.
Of course, it could be worse. It might be called CSS and feature the bane of my existence as a designer!!! ;-)

WIthout meaning to offend anyone, my reflex is to say that it’s another show to satisfy the idiot element in this great country. Another “fake reality” show to feed into that part of our culture that would rather win a lottery than apply themselves to making or building something. Before we go feeling so superior, part of that element—in my opinion–are all the marketers of marketing, who make nothing and contribute nothing, but spend their time getting famous and either getting rich or attempting to win the lottery of a following that will make them rich by listen to them and hearing them say, “You, too, can become successful selling.” Not making something worthwhile to sell, mind you.

Come on, this could be fun! At least it’s about something we all like. Who doesn’t love watching other designers work… either you can pick up a thing or two from someone who’s really good, or you can feel superior to some schmuck trying to pass himself off as a designer… entertaining either way!

While I would probably watch this. I don’t think many other people would. Although I’m sure since it’s a “Americas Top _______” show that they will throw in all sorts of crazy twists like design a magazine from mud and a toothpick.

Pretty stupid. Period.

Isn’t any exposure good exposure? Personally, I’m excited to see graphic design spotlighted on the tube. Every other aspect of design has been exploited, interior, hair, makeup, photography. What negatives have rained down on these industries due to their reality shows?
I think the only negative effect I can perceive coming from this type of show is the reinforcement of the effeminate “designer” stereotype.

Would rather quit design than have this show happen. Honestly, I hoped that as a ‘breed’ designers had more smarts than to be into the 15 minutes of fame jive.

I will watch it. And most people who hates it now, will watch it too.
Thats a fact.
:P

Ridiculous… Are you serious? They will have all the cliche stereotypes.
The artsy gay guy. Maybe 2 of those. The “struggling” mom designer.
The hot girl who draws good anime. The indie rock guy and girl. Oh, with emo hair. One black rasta dude, and one asian chick.
Gimme a break.

This is funny. I would be interested to see just who ends up being these “final seven.” Hopefully just regular designers—that is, real people, not stereotypes—who decided it would be fun to go on TV.
And I’d hope the show would be more like the first couple of seasons of “Who Wants to Work for Donald Trump?” than “Supermodel” or “Big Brother” or “Let’s All Catfight Over Some Guy.” Who needs all the drama—I just like to see the competitions…
